Hyacinth Bucket would not be happy living here. The immediate neighbour lives in a grand château with spectacular towers and Mrs Bucket would undoubtedly feel as if she were the poor relation in this hilltop setting. However, while this 1974 stone-built property now needs modernising, the location is lovely, with pretty gardens surrounding it, and the stone outbuildings could be developed.
External stairs lead up to the entrance hall. The kitchen is a reasonable size but is dated. The heart of the house is undoubtedly the huge, triple aspect open-plan living/dining room. This floor is completed by two double bedrooms, bathroom and separate WC. The second floor consists of a third bedroom and two further rooms which could be used to extend the accommodation. Down in the ground floor ‘basement’ is an earth floor wine cellar, garage and storage area.
The outbuildings are also constructed in stone and could be developed, subject to planning permission. The gardens extend to two thirds of an acre and offer open views of the countryside.
St Saviol is split in two: the pretty, hilltop area where this house is situated and the main, industrial section of the village down in the valley. There is a tiny railway station with trains to Poitiers and Angouleme, both of which have international airports. Supermarkets are at nearby Civray, a riverside town with bars, restaurants, cinema, lido and a pavement café culture in the summertime. © |
