First impressions are important: imposing wrought-iron gates, a drive through one’s own wooded parkland before turning the corner and setting eyes on the main house...quite an entrance! It is not hard to see why this was once a prestigious country hotel. Simply add in an estate of outbuildings perfect for redevelopment as an equestrian centre and a magnificent orangery.
It is impossible to describe a vast house adequately in just a few lines. You need to visit it to take in the grandeur and scale. A large entrance hall leads off to four reception rooms, including a conservatory, as well as a kitchen and utility room. Four of the first floor bedrooms have en-suite facilities, the second floor is ready to be converted – if necessary – and there is a vaulted cellar.
Wooded parkland takes up about half of the four hectare estate. There is a pond, formal garden areas and the gated development of outbuildings have their own potential road access.
Despite the splendid isolation, one is just 2kms from the hillside town of Celles-sur-Belle with its medieval abbey, bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets and summer lido. The capital of the department, Niort is fifteen minutes away, offering a full range of retail therapy and both the visual and culinary delights of Green Venice. La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast is 45 minutes’ drive.© |
