If PG Wodehouse’s impeccable manservant, Jeeves, were house-hunting in France he would definitely approve of this fine property. It must have been built for a wealthy family with domestic staff aplenty. Situated on the edge of a little market town (large village), the walled garden leads down to the river which is two hundred metres from the source of the Boutonne, with countryside views.
A hallway leads off to two reception rooms and the kitchen. The latter is fairly small and it might be better to use this as a scullery, with one of the living rooms transformed into a kitchen befitting a large house such as this. The original winding staircase takes one up to four large double bedrooms and a bathroom. Up again, the vast attic could be converted. In addition, there is a superb vaulted cellar, attached outbuilding housing workshop, summer kitchen and WC, and a useful garage.
A terrasse looks over the river and beyond. There are steps down to a private river source. The walled garden is currently set out as a gigantic vegetable plot.
Chef Boutonne has two supermarkets, a range of small shops, choice of bars and restaurants, a weekly open air market, builders’ merchants and a pavement café culture during the summer. © |
