The road from Limoges to La Rochelle passes through and I have often wondered what this impressive looking longère was like inside; now I know. Set back from the road, it is currently run as a bed & breakfast. The location is perfect for this type of business while the road noise is not an issue in the enormous back garden. With attics, barn and outbuildings it would be possible to develop the current business into a large complex, with plenty of space for caravans as well.
The main house has a flagstone hallway, an enormous downstairs bedroom and a smaller double. There is a spacious living room with stone fireplace and wood burner, leading into the farmhouse kitchen. The bathroom on this level contains a claw-foot bath, shower and WC. Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms, two with en-suite facilities. Large attics and the attached barn mean that extra guest rooms could easily be added. The pretty one bedroom (plus mezzanine) guest cottage includes a lovely bread oven feature in the living room.
There is a lawn to the front and a huge garden behind the house. Outbuildings include a hangar and the concrete structure of what could be developed into a large guest house.
The hamlet has a roadside restaurant while a short drive takes one to the hilltop market town of Melle, with its hypermarkets, bars, restaurants, sports centres and weekly open-air market. © |
