This is one of the loveliest properties I have ever seen. It ticks so many boxes on house hunters’ wish lists. The location is stunning, set high on its plot with wonderful views over the river and fields beyond. The garden is terraced down to the entrance gate. Internally, the house is perfect and bathed in light (unusual in a French house). It would be ideal for use as a B & B.
One entry to the house is by the veranda dining room. In the autumn the bank beside is covered in wild cyclamen. Off the hall is the fully fitted and equipped kitchen and large lounge with double aspect windows, feature fireplace with wood-burning stove and gleaming floorboards. There is also a useful utility room, and doorway to the cellar/garden rooms below. Up the original elm staircase, on the first floor are two double bedrooms with river views and en-suite shower rooms. The third bedroom, a single, also doubles as an office. The master bedroom and bathroom are on the top floor with those views and an amazing roof shape. Beneath the house, but opening onto the garden is the boiler room, workshop and garden room. The garage is to one side. The balustrade terrace is a perfect summer evening entertaining venue. The guest cottage with bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom and poolside terrace, has been let very successfully as a gîte.
The house has had a lot of work done on the wiring, plumbing, roof and external pointing – as well as the internal decoration, of course. The in-ground pool is a recent addition. It is a short walk from the house to the centre of the old market town of Civray and yet the impression you have is of being in the country. Civray has all the facilities of modern living whilst retaining the charm created by its history and twice weekly market. In the summer it has a pavement café culture.© |
