The main picture was taken when the current owners were having some of their roof re-done; hopefully that will have been completed by the time I next visit. Indeed, there have been lots of improvements made to the house internally, too; one of the nice things about this property is that you could move in and do absolutely no work, or, if you want a larger home there is the attached barn to expand into. There is plenty of garden and the location is lovely: a sleepy hamlet on hilly ground with the river Clain down in the valley.
The living space is open-plan, with a corner kitchen, dining area and lounge. An insert wood burner offers alternative warmth to the electric radiators. The bathroom is modern, with a separate shower cubicle and glass brick window. There is a separate WC. There are currently just the two bedrooms but what is a small house (by French standards) could easily, inexpensively be expanded.
The garden is mainly to the front and side, with a thin strip behind. A covered area in front of the house offers welcome shade in the midday summer sun.
Champagne St Hilaire has a bar/restaurant, post office and general store. The nearby riverside town of Couhé (ten minutes drive) offers bars, eight restaurants, shops, builders’ merchants, camp site and two supermarkets. There is a medieval market place and typical pavement café culture. © |
