A mixture of red and white grapes was hanging from the vines when I visited on a sweltering July morning. The owner offered me a glass of Bordeaux so I never tried the home-made produce but I am told that they are delicious and I thought how pretty they looked on the front façade of what could be a lovely country home. There is work to be done but the current owner has already done a lot of the hard graft leaving mostly the fun bits to complete.
The front door leads into a farmhouse style kitchen with an attractive tiled floor and fireplace with wood burner. A new open staircase leads upstairs. To the right of the kitchen is a downstairs bedroom while to the left is a vast living room which also has a fireplace. From here a corridor leads to a WC and a wine store. An old staircase goes up to a wide landing and three large rooms, all insulated. The one above the kitchen has a concrete floor and is an obvious place for a bathroom.
The gardens are to the front of the cottages. The second cottage contains four large rooms and a stone lean to behind, with access onto a communal lane. There is a garage and an unattached store.
The commune has a popular pizza restaurant while ten minutes away is the riverside town of Civray offering a selection of bars, restaurants, artisan shops, supermarkets, banks, garages, doctors’ surgery, traditional open-air market, cinema, summer lido and pavement café culture. © |
