Properties in La Souterraine - what can you get for your money?

50 000 euros will still (just) buy a house or barn for renovation or restoration, but you will need 100 000 euros for a habitable house plus a little work, and

150 000 for a ready to move into property.

Modern properties (called pavillons) are not as expensive but not perhaps in the style of the "traditional" which we seem to want.

This is a region of dramatic, undulating landscapes, lively traditional market towns and sleepy hamlets characterised by the imposing silver-grey granite stone of the local houses.  The tourist offices describe this as ' the green heart of France'; the image of the Limousin being a mythical, magical land of rolling hills, freshwater lakes and beautiful villages may be a cliché but that, fortunately, is exactly what you will find in one of France's most attractive and unspoilt regions.  While temperatures tend to be a couple of degrees lower than further west in Poitou-Charentes, the backdrop of a 'Paradise Lost' more than compensates for this.

The Papillon Properties office is based in the medieval market town of La Souterraine in the north of the region and has a wide range of properties within a 40 km radius from 40 000 euros to 400 000 euros. Larger than Yorkshire but with a population of less than Leeds, the region is mostly agricultural, but is nonetheless one of the most scenic, and is no longer as inaccessible thanks to Ryanair and the TGV. Prices have risen in the last two years, but are still very low compared to the UK, and there are still bargains to be found.

The region has one motorway, the A20, which runs from Vierzon in the north to Toulouse. The airport at Limoges has daily services to and from Stansted, and shortly Liverpool and Southampton. Limoges airport is 45 minutes' drive from here and Poitiers airport about an hour. Paris is three hours by train from Limoges and this will be reduced when the TGV is available.
